In 1727, a military man, Captain Francisco de Mello Palheta, introduced prized coffee seeds from French Guyana for the very first time in Brazil. At the time, French Guyana had a monopoly on coffee beans and refused to make them available to Brazilians.

Through charm and romance, Captain de Mello Palheta wooed a sample of coffee beans from the governor's wife who rewarded him for his personal flair with a bouquet of flowers where she hid coffee beans as a gift for "memories' sake." This was the beginning of the coffee trade for Brazil. At the time, sugar was the main crop in Brazil. However, it was quickly surpassed by coffee.

NATURAL HANDCRAFTED SOAP. -

The "Fazendas de Café" (coffee plantations) were run as small states by coffee growing families committed to establishing an image of nobility and high class status. About 67% of all farms have less than 10 acres. About 25% of farms have less than 50 acres. The remaining 8% exceed 50 acres. As the song goes in Brazil, "...they've got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil..."

What is amazing about this huge land mass is that only 7% represents arable land; 1% permanent crops and the balance (92%) other use such as urban, mangroves, jungle, forests, etc.

International immigration has played a very influential role in the development of Brazilian culture. The heritage of most Brazilians today who have traced their family trees include European, African, Amerindian, Asian and Middle Eastern backgrounds. Without any doubt, this is one of the most interesting features of Brazilian culture, music, cuisine and traditions. Brazil's Coffee Regions
There are three main coffee growing areas in Brazil: Mogiana, Sul Minas and Cerrado. These areas feature moderate sunlight and rain. The temperatures are steady year-round at about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, ideal to grow Arabica and Robusta coffee trees. Arabica accounts for about 70% of total harvest. Robusta, a hardier plant that produces lower quality beans makes up the remaining 30%.

The Mogiana region: This is the area along the border of São Paulo and Minas Gerais states north of São Paulo. The Mogiana coffee region is named after the Companhia Mogiana Estrada de Ferro train line that ran through this area when trains and coffee were inseparable companions in commercial and community development. The Mogiana area is known for its rich red soil.

The Sul Minas region: This is the heart of Brazil's coffee country. The rugged, rolling hills of Sul Minas, are located in the southern part of Minas Gerais state northeast of São Paulo.

The Cerrado region: This is a high, semi-arid plateau surrounding the city of Patrocinio, between São Paulo and Brasilia. This area is located in Brazil's central high plains region.
Of all the coffees growing in these regions, Brazilian Santos Bourbon is Brazil's best well known Specialty Coffee.

Santos is a market name referring to the port through which this coffee is traditionally shipped.
The Arabica coffee plants that produce this coffee came from the rich volcanic soils of the island of Bourbon, now called the Island of Reunion.
From a historical perspective, the island of Reunion is located in the Indian Ocean, East of Madagascar. This island was an important stopover on the East Indian trading route. When the Suez Canal opened, the island lost its importance.
Fortunately for Brazil, the trees imported from the island of Reunion took root very well and started one of Brazil's main cash crops.
Brazilian Santos Bourbon is a light bodied coffee, with low acidity, a pleasing aroma and a mild, smooth flavor. Brazilian Santos Bourbon is dry-processed (dried inside the fruit) which is why some of the sweetness of the fruit carries into the cup.
Brazil's Coffee, Music, Art and Cultural Traditions
Coffee is one of Brazil's most valuable and widely traded commodity crops.
Brazil's origins make it a musical country full of passion, sentiment and joy: Indians' reed flutes; Portuguese viola players, and African thrilling drum rhythms. Brazilian music includes the soft sounds of bossa nova, the driving beat of samba and other rhythms based on percussion instruments and hand clapping.

The exact origin of samba is unknown. Perhaps it was born in the streets of Rio de Janeiro from a combination of Portuguese courtly songs, African rhythms and native Indian fast footwork. The reality is samba remains a part of Rio de Janeiro's streets. Carnival is one of the largest parties on Earth when hundreds of samba schools and thousands of people put on an unforgettable display of colors, music, noise and, yes, a lot of Brazilian coffee!

Coffee is very much a part of Brazilian life where people encourage each other to enjoy a morning cup of coffee, to smell the flowers and to listen to the songbirds. There is a connection between coffee, songbirds and samba, Brazil's most popular rhythm. The natural sounds of songbirds influence many musical tunes and variations. The costumes of Carnival and daily clothing reflect colorful images and hues inspired by local wildlife.

Across the country, there is a growing awareness of the wildlife habitat reduction as a result of urbanization, conventional modern farming and deforestation. As a result, shade grown coffee, the traditional method of coffee farming, is growing in acceptance among farmers who recognize it as a positive alternative for wildlife conservation.

The Brazilian "Cafezinho" Tradition:
The "cafezinho" tradition is as Brazilian as Apple Pie is American. "Cafezinho" is the diminutive word in Portuguese for coffee. In Brazil, however, "cafezinho" is the way to welcome anyone into homes, businesses or just about anywhere. In Brazil it does not take long to learn the phrase "você quer um cafezinho?" (do you want a little coffee?). This is a question heard everywhere, all day long and almost always followed by a very small cup of very potent coffee. You can call it a mini espresso with a powerful punch!

This week I took one of the soap out of the the box, from the line Natural Handcrafted Soap.
It was to bathe my daughter, but has become my favorite soap., Butter and Goat Milk with Oatmeal and Honey Soap.

Day After was a hot day, when the skin seeks refreshment and care for freshness , -
I try another soaps the Lemongrass Soap.
Lemongrass Natural soap are refreshing, stimulating and soothing.
Was fantastic.

I had also send a friend from Brazil for the Carnival in Rio a kit with a Brazilian Coffee Soap.
Brazilian Coffee Scrub are Great for as a hand and foot and body scrub soap.
Brazilian coffee grinds absorb garlic and onion smell off your fingers, I recommended this soap as a hand and foot and body scrub soap.
Great kit after Carnival dance all day!

French Cafe au Lait Soap with Cocoa Butter

Cafe au lait (French for "coffee with milk") is prepared with strong, hot coffee and scalded milk. It is the national breakfast drink of France, where it's served steaming hot. This recipe is easy enough to incorporate into your morning routine. People are very sensitive about how they smell. Humans do not appreciate the power of a bad smell as much as skunks appreciate theirs. Alcohol/witch hazel Wipe your armpits with alcohol, white vinegar or witch hazel instead of deodorant.

Alum Try using a crystal rock made from the mineral salt potassium alum instead of a deodorant. It won't keep you dry as an antiperspirant will, but they clog your sweat glands and contain aluminum chlorohydrate, which may lead to future health problems.

Apple cider vinegar Apple cider vinegar eliminates under arm body odor when used in place of deodorant because it reduces the pH of the skin. Bacteria can't live in areas with low pH.

• White vinegar is also helpful. Place some on a cotton ball and apply to the underarms instead of deodorant. The vinegar smell is gone in minutes and you should be smell-free all day.

Baby powder Use baby powder or talc in areas of heavy perspiration.

Baby wipes (see towelettes below) also work, but the results may be temporary.

Baking soda Baking soda, the odor-eating standby, can be used instead of deodorant. Just apply the powder to your dry armpits. It will kill bacteria and help absorb perspiration. Cornstarch can also be used instead or mixed with the baking soda.

Bauxite crystal deodorant works very well at controlling underarm odors.

Parsley/alfalfa Chewing parsley, alfalfa and other leafy greens will help neutralize body odor, probably because of the deodorizing effect of the chlorophyll.

Radishes Juice about two dozen radishes, add 1/4 teaspoon of glycerine, and put in a squirt or spray-top bottle. Use as an underarm deodorant or to reduce foot odor.

Rosemary is an antibacterial herb. Put 8 to 10 drops of the essential oil in 1 ounce of water and appy it where needed.

Sage Herbalists suggest drinking a cup of sage tea daily to reduce sweat gland activity. This is especially true for those who perspire excessively due to tension. Use 11/2 teaspoonsful of dried sage or two tea bags in one cup of water; steep for ten minutes; drink in small doses throughout the day.

• Fresh sage leaves blended with tomato juice has been found to be very effective.

Tea tree is an antibacterial herb. Make a deodorant by putting 2 drops of the essential oil into 1 ounce of water and apply where needed.

Towelettes (baby wipes) Useful when a tense moment surges the sex hormones which produce fluid under the arms and around the genital areas that, when combined with bacteria, causes odor.

Turnip juice Turnip juice will reduce underarm odor for up to 10 hours. Grate a turnip, squeeze the juice through cheesecloth, so that you have two teaspoonsful. Wash your armpits first, and vigorously rub one teaspoonful on each one.

Wheat grass Take 500 mg of wheat grass daily on an empty stomach and wash down with a glass of water. The chlorophyll will dramatically reduce body odor.

Silicea Homeopaths recommend dissolving three 6X tablets of the tissue salt Silicea under the tongue each morning and evening to knock out odor.

When I lived in New York City I was use to drink big coffee out of the iconic Anthora coffee cup made by Leslie Buck,in fact, that it has become an iconic symbol of the city, right up there along with the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Kona coffee beans are classified according to the seed type. Type I beans consist of two beans per cherry, flat on one side, oval on the other. Type II beans consist of one round bean per cherry, otherwise known as a peaberry. That is an essential oils who we added on our kona coffee soaps.

Handmade Fine Soap Since 1900s -2010

Santa Lucia Murari Borba was a farmer's daughter from Murari's Borba, born in Italy 1904. She moved to Brazil in 1917 from her home in Toscany where she had to learn to make soap from scratch and essential oils from the plants out of necessity.

After years of making soap for her 13 children, her family finally convinced her to open a small soap shop in Sao Paulo Brazil where she made soaps with her family for 25 years, those soap recipes found there way to North Carolina last year when I went back to Brazil for Christmas and asked grandmother for food recipes to bring back to NC. While looking through boxes of recipes we came across all her old soap and essential oil recipes.
Here is some of our soaps made from Grandma's batches.

No 'excellent' or 'very good' coffee

NEW YORK (Reuters) – After tasting 37 different blended coffees, Consumer Reports couldn't find one that measured up to its "excellent" or "very good" ratings, the publication said Tuesday.

The highest score for the 13 decaffeinated coffees also failed to reach the top two categories. The better scoring varieties included Allegro Organic Decaf, Blend Medium Dark, Peet's Decaf House Blend, Caribou Daybreak Coffee Morning Blend Decaf and Bucks County Decaf Breakfast blend.

Very nice! I love genuine handmade soaps, and this is a fantastic one. Very rich and lathers well. Has a great blend of all natural ingredients. No synthetic additives. It has virtually no scent. Sometimes natural soaps go overboard with essential oils. This one is just perfect. You are simply left feeling and smelling very cleansed, and your skin feels nourished - not dried out. Nice! Highly recommended. To the best of my knowledge this is the only natural handcrafted soap bar I have found. Hopefully naturalhandcraftedsoap.com will offer more of them. Their other soap bars that I have tried are all wonderful (when you can get them for they always sell out fast).

I have coffee issues, and thanks to science, they are only getting worse.

A couple years ago, the first thing I would do after waking up would be to make a cup of coffee and immediately sit down and type out an entire page on my manual typewriter. An entire page of whatever came to mind, no rules, no parameters. Just as a little exercise.
Coffee is my Muse and my destroyer. Coffee is my inspiration and my perspiration and will drive me to premature expiration. There are those who claim to love the ritual of the morning cup of coffee, but they have nothing on me. Satanists would be shocked by the amount of ritual I have built up around my a.m. fix.

I'm a coffee snob, a coffee connoisseur and a coffee whore. I have a French press encrusted with bean-shaped jewels. I have ended friendships upon discovering 7-Eleven coffee cups in their car. I have asked strangers for just one sip of their Joe. I've got it bad. I've published no less than a dozen coffee-centric columns, drawn countless doodles of coffee cups, and am not embarrassed to be seen in a Starbucks.
I have had an on-again, off-again relationship with coffee for the past 5 years that would warrant a People magazine cover story. And with each turn of the roller coaster I have made a big deal about it to anyone within earshot, including the person selling me the coffee at the time.

And now, just as I am absolutely and finally done with the bean (I mean it this time), I see the headlines, "Coffee May Prevent Liver Cancer."

What? NO! Don't you dare prevent cancer!

Seems the Japanese have done a 10 year study showing that 1-2 cups of coffee a day cuts in half the chances of getting the most common form of liver cancer.

OK, I remember those TV commercials in the 1980s, the ones where Cecily Tyson claimed that coffee gives you "serenity." Ha! Are we talking about the same thing? Serenity? Not if you do it right, Cecily.

But that's advertising. You expect to be lied to. But this new claim is not "Juan Valdez sez: Coffee prevents cancer. Drink up." This is science.

I thought science was supposed to help, and now here it is giving me the green light to get all jacked up again. "Drink coffee, Barry, your liver will thank you." Yeah, but my kidneys will kick my ass. And there's two of them and only one of me.

On the shelf under medicine cabinet - 18 Camay in 4 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2.
On the Kleenex dispenser - 11 Camay in 2 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 3.
On the bedroom dresser - 1 stack of 3 Cashmere Bouquet, - 1 stack of 4 hotel-size Ivory, and 8 Camay in 2 stacks of 4.
Inside the medicine cabinet - 14 Camay in 3 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2.
In the shower soap dish - 6 Camay, very moist.
On the northeast corner of tub - 1 Cashmere Bouquet, slightly used.
On the northwest corner of tub - 6 Camays in 2 stacks of 3.
Please ask Kathy when she services my room to make sure the stacks are neatly piled and dusted. Also, please advise her that stacks of more than 4 have a tendency to tip. May I suggest that my bedroom window sill is not in use and will make an excellent spot for future soap deliveries. One more item, I have purchased another bar of natural handcrafted soap which I am keeping in the hotel vault in order to avoid further misunderstandings.
